Background Info on the Malaysian People

The term "Malaysian" (or "Malayan") denotes the population of Malaysia and the Malay Archipelago.

According to the World Factbook, Malaysia has a population of 22 million people (July 2000). Ethnic groups include 58% Malay and other indigenous, 26% Chinese, 7% Indian, and 9% others. Religion includes Islam, Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Sikhism. In addition, Shamanism is practiced in East Malaysia.

Malay (also known as Bahasa Melayu) is the official language of Malayasia. Other languages include English, Chinese dialects (Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka, Hainan, Foochow), Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Panjabi, and Thai. Several indigenous languages are spoken in East Malaysia, the largest of which are Iban and Kadazan.

The SIL Ethnologue reports that 17.6 million people worldwide speak Malay, making it number 54 on their list of Top 100 World Languages by Population. They report that 6,253 people in the U.S. speak Malay (1970).

Create International sells a 12-minute gospel video in the Malay language, as well as a 14-minute video in English describing the culture and heritage of the Malay people.

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship offers an online description and photos of the Malay people.

One of the best introductions to the culture and customs of the people of Malaysia is the 4-page Culturegram published by Brigham Young University. A single copy costs $6. (The sample Culturegram on Hungary at their website will give you an idea of the content before you buy.)

Information for Churches

Perhaps you've noticed that several Malaysian families have moved into your community. Your church would like to get acquainted with them and find ways to serve your new neighbors. But how can you begin?

Begin by cultivating a loving heart, a listening ear, and the habit of prayer. Look for opportunities to learn about other cultures and develop skills for cross-cultural communication. There are lots of resources on this site, including the article "How to Start a Cross-Cultural Ministry," that can help you prepare to move forward in faith.

The Jesus Film is a great way to share the gospel in the "heart language" of your Malaysian neighbors. Campus Crusade for Christ has produced this beautiful film of the gospel of Luke and translated it into over 600 languages, including Malay, Malay (Pattani), Tamil, and Iban. Your church can buy a video for less than $20 and sponsor a "Malaysian Night" to show the film and begin a dialogue. Ask Malaysian leaders in the community if they would like to see the film and if they'll help you invite other families.

To order the Jesus Film, call Campus Crusade at 1-800-432-1997. (The usual price is $29, but if you ask for "Internet pricing" you may be able to purchase the video for $19 plus shipping.)

The International School of Ministry offers affordable bible training in Tamil, Malayalam or Mandarin . Their course in structured, taught by interdenominational Christian leaders, and available on audio tapes so your church can become a training center.
