Cumbre is a five-year initiative to reach Hispanic people for Christ in North America. Hispanic pastors and community leaders from the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, and Mexico kicked off the initiative by gathering recently to pray, and brainstorm, network and dream about how to mobilize Hispanic believers in the pew to reach out to their communities. Cumbre is planning follow-up conferences in 2004 and 2006.

One of the sponsors of Cumbre is A.M.E.N. (Alianza de Ministerios Evangelicos Nacionales), a multidenominational association of evangelical leaders (clergy and lay) from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Cultural Change and Your Church:
Helping Your Church Thrive in a Diverse Society

by Michael Pocock and Joseph Henriques
Baker Book House, April 2002

I haven't read this book yet, but plan to, based on the publisher's description: "Michael Pocock and Joseph Henriques consider the Bible's examples and teaching related to diversity, introduce several churches currently modeling cross-cultural ministry, and suggest hands-on ways for church leaders to encourage change and proactive thinking."

Foreign to Familiar:
A Guide to Understanding Hot - And Cold - Climate Cultures

by Sarah A. Lanier
McDougal Publishing, November 2000

This is a great book by an author who has served with YWAM since 1980, serving in various countries around the world.

"Sarah Lanier has captured the keys to understanding our own -- and others' -- ways of doing and saying things. I guarantee that if you follow the principles in this book that the boundaries of your worldview will expand, and you will begin to comprehend your own cultural ways in the process. This book is a quick read and a must read in today’s world where "cross-cultural" may simply mean "across the street" where you live." --

What does it take to build a successful cross-cultural ministry partnership? Daniel Rickett reflected on 20 years of experience and found the essential components to be a blend of vision, relationship, and results. In "Making Your Partnership Work," he shows how to build a partnership by focusing on nine imperatives of partnership:

  • Creating shared vision
  • Establishing compatibility
  • Applying ground rules
  • Keeping the relationship open and personal
  • Building intercultural understanding
  • Fostering trust
  • Measuring progress
  • Tracking agreements, contributions, and outcomes
  • Learning and handling change together

This is a good time to get to know your Muslim neighbors. Our page, "Gospel Resources for Muslims," has information that can help you better understand their heritage. We also highly recommend Dr. Miriam Adeney's new book:
